What the hell?!

If I was a sports headline writer I'd go with "Battle of the Blues makes Zidane see Red". France had a real chance of winning before this happened. Materazzi and Zidane had been getting in each other's faces the whole match, and Materazzi had just yanked on Zidane's shirt to keep him from aiding in a French attack. The two of them started walking upfield after Materazzi let go - Zidane said something, Materazzi said something, then the now-infamous headbutt. I'm guessing Materazzi said something racial or he made fun of Zidane's mother. Either way Zidane shouldn't have lost his cool but it'd be a lot more satisfying if he'd punched the guy or kicked him in the knees. What a crappy way to end a stellar career.
Oh well, congrats to the Azzurri, I guess.

  • Hey, Ezra did you read about how both the English and French press (the newspapers, not the coffee brewer) allegedly hired expert lip-readers to decipher what the Italian actually said to Zizou to make him react like that? It seems that the man marking Zidane said "Son of a terrorist whore" or words to the effect, without doubt referring to Zizou's Algerian roots.

Happy Birthday also to your Tita Baby!

  • Yeah, and they should probably ask for their money back. Everything from "crazy terrorist" to "play for your own country" was supposedly said. Both Zidane and Materazzi have said it wasn't racist in nature, so I guess it really was something about his mother and sister (which Zidane mentioned in an interview).

    See here for the details.

  • Looks like that link isn't working. If it was it would lead to a BBC article repeating what I said but in different words.
